Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining of composites is a subtractive process where material is precisely removed using computerized controls and cutting or abrasive tools. Cutting paths are programmed using 3D models, then translated into precise machining instructions. As a result of residual stresses and resin shrinkage from the curing process, composites can deform slightly from their ideal shape and must be constrained during the machining process. Trim fixtures are used to accomplish this and must be designed to locate and orient the component in the machine space, as well as allow relief areas for cutting paths. Once the part and fixture are installed, cutting tools are guided by computer-controlled movements to precisely shape the composite material according to the programmed design.
